Tree of Life tapestry Inspired by William Morris

The Tree of Life tapestry was designed by Morris & Co in the late 19th century. The tapestry is designed with intricate leaf and branch patterns. The core elements of these patterns come from the tree of life. This is a common theme in many of Morris’ works, including other textiles and wallpaper patterns. The gorgeous and detailed background in this tree of life tapestry is inspired by the medieval decoration technique Mille Fleurs. The pre-Renaissance art left a deep impression on William Morris and others who accepted the pre-Raphaelite approach to art. The motivation was to reflect more anxiety about mass production and preference for art. Participate in the individual, not the technology used in production. It is for this reason that many of Morris&Co’s work (so much can still survive) is very distinctive.

Based on William Morris’s design, Signare produced a collection of Tapestry product with dark burgundy red backgrounds, includes Wall hanging, cushion covers and a collection of ladies handbags.

The Art of Tapestry

Tapestry is an ancient art dating back over 2000 years. In the UK and Europe, tapestry art was most prominent during the middle-ages. Barons and knights would adorn their castle walls with them for both decoration and warmth. A tapestry is started by stretching plain warp threads on a loom to create a grid. The coloured weft threads are then weaved in and out of the warp threads, building up a complete tapestry. Our production method uses modern mechanical looms which greatly speeds up what used to take weeks or months by hand.

A special characteristic of each Signare bag is that each one is unique. Signare means ‘Signature’ in Latin and we wish every customer to possess their own individual signature bag.
